Europe’s summer is quietly moving into fall, one of Venice’s most iconic hotels is entering its Four Seasons era, a gorgeous new luxury ship has arrived, and there is one European cruise situation I think travelers need to understand.

There is a lot of travel news every week.

Most of it, quite frankly, you do not need to know.

A hotel announces a new cocktail menu. An airline changes something you’ll never notice. Another “must-visit” destination suddenly appears on everyone’s list.

So I wanted to start something new inside The Private Edit.

Every Friday, I’m going to give you the luxury travel news I actually think is worth paying attention to.

Not everything that happened.

The things that could change where you travel, when you travel, where you stay or how I would advise you to plan a trip.

And there is a LOT to talk about this week.

THE BIG STORY: Europe’s Summer Is Quietly Moving to Fall

This one immediately caught my attention because it confirms something I’ve been seeing and saying for quite some time.

The traditional European summer travel calendar is changing.

Air Canada said this week that it expects record September and October revenue as more premium travelers move their international trips away from the hottest, busiest weeks of summer.

And where are those travelers going?

Italy. France. Spain. The Mediterranean. Japan.

Even more interesting, the trend is beginning to creep into November.

I have been telling travelers for years that you do not have to go to Europe in June, July and August simply because that is when everyone else goes to Europe.

In fact, if your schedule allows you to travel outside those months, I often prefer it.

The temperatures can be better.

The experience can feel less frantic.

Restaurants, hotels and cities begin settling back into their normal rhythms.

And sometimes the biggest luxury of all is simply not sharing every beautiful place with 10,000 other people.

But here’s the interesting part.

September is not really a secret anymore.

I think October is becoming what September used to be.

And I would not be surprised if, over the next several years, we begin talking much more seriously about November travel in Italy, France and Spain.

For the right traveler and the right itinerary, I am absolutely here for it.

HOTEL I’M WATCHING: The Danieli Begins Its Four Seasons Era

If you love Venice, this is a big one.

Danieli, Venezia, A Four Seasons Hotel is officially confirming arrivals beginning August 26, 2026.

And this isn’t just another luxury hotel opening.

The Danieli is part of Venice.

Its history stretches across three interconnected palaces on the Riva degli Schiavoni, including the 15th century Palazzo Dandolo, just steps from Piazza San Marco.

The property will initially open with 120 rooms and suites, with another 56 accommodations planned for 2027. When complete, there will be 176 rooms and suites.

The Danieli Spa is also expected later this year with treatment rooms, a sauna and hammam.

And yes, Terrazza Danieli is returning with those ridiculous views across the Venetian lagoon.

This one is especially fun for me because I have had the opportunity to meet the hotel’s General Manager, Christian Zandonella, twice and have direct contact with him.

So believe me when I tell you:

I am watching this property very closely.

I also think there is something important to understand if you’re considering staying here soon.

The August opening is the beginning of the new Danieli, not necessarily the finished product.

With the spa arriving later this year and additional rooms and suites coming in 2027, travelers visiting at different points over the next year may experience slightly different versions of the hotel.

Would I still be excited to be among the first through those doors?

Absolutely.

Sometimes the best travel memories begin at the exact moment you think the day is falling apart.

An Editor’s Letter

One of the things people don’t talk about enough is that luxury travel can still have very ordinary moments.

You’re tired.

You’re hungry.

Your body has absolutely no idea what time it is.

And suddenly, the beautiful European city you’ve been dreaming about for months feels...a little overwhelming.

That’s exactly where we found ourselves in Madrid.

We had landed that early afternoon after leaving the Canary Islands, checked into our hotel, wandered the streets, and somehow managed to miss every normal meal time. It was too late for lunch, too early for dinner, and somewhere between European and American time, our patience was quietly disappearing. You know it is bad when you have passed by so many cute restaurants but skip them, saying “oh we will have plenty to pick from soon…”

AND THEN IT HITS.

If you’ve ever traveled with someone you love, you know the feeling.

Nobody is actually upset with each other.

You’re just...hungry.

The kind of hungry where every decision suddenly feels harder than it should.

We were tired.

A little disoriented.

Still trying to get our bearings in a new city.

And if I’m being honest, we were dangerously close to calling it a day and heading back to the hotel.

Then I did something I do far more often than I’d like to admit.

I opened Google Maps.

Not looking for the restaurant.

Just looking for any restaurant.

Something nearby.

Something with good reviews and most importantly…CLOSE BY.

Something that would rescue us from becoming one of those couples silently walking down a European street pretending everything was fine.

That’s when it appeared like a beacon of light in Google Maps…

Five stars.

Just around the corner.

I looked at my husband.

“Let’s just go see.”

We walked over, peeked through the front door, and immediately realized this wasn’t just another neighborhood restaurant.

The dining room was full.

Every table was occupied.

Servers moved confidently through the room while guests lingered over wine and conversation. Nobody seemed to be in a hurry to leave.

It had that unmistakable feeling every great restaurant has.

The kind where you instinctively know you’re somewhere special before you’ve even been seated.

We stepped inside anyway.

The host greeted us warmly before asking the inevitable question.

“Do you have a reservation?”

We looked at each other.

“No...”

He smiled politely, stepped away for what felt like forever, and disappeared into the dining room.

At that point, we weren’t hoping for history.

We were simply hoping for food.

A chair.

Maybe some bread and sangria.

When he returned, he smiled.

“I have something for you.”

I don’t think I’ve ever been happier to hear those four words.

We followed him to our table, grateful simply to be sitting down.

It wasn’t until I opened the menu that everything changed.

I looked down.

Then back at the room.

Then back at the menu.

I looked across the table at my husband and quietly said,

“Ummm...babe...I think we’re somewhere very, very special.”

We Had Accidentally Walked Into History

I started reading the menu.

Then I looked around the room again.

Heavy wooden beams stretched across the ceiling. The walls felt as though they had witnessed centuries of conversations. There wasn’t anything flashy about the dining room. No over-the-top décor. No dramatic presentation.

It simply felt...timeless.

There was an energy that’s difficult to describe but easy to recognize.

The kind of place that doesn’t need to convince you it’s special because it has absolutely nothing left to prove.

I quietly pulled out my phone again.

A quick search confirmed what I was beginning to suspect.

We hadn’t just found a highly rated restaurant.

We had accidentally wandered into Casa Botín, established in 1725 and recognized by the Guinness World Records as the oldest continuously operating restaurant in the world.

For nearly three hundred years, travelers have been walking through these same doors.

Generations of chefs have cooked in the same historic kitchens.

The original wood-fired oven, still in use today, has been roasting its famous suckling pig since the restaurant first opened its doors.

Some of history’s most recognizable names have dined here, including Ernest Hemingway, who famously mentioned Botín in The Sun Also Rises and reportedly considered it one of his favorite places in Madrid.

Suddenly, our very ordinary search for “somewhere to eat” had become something entirely different.

What had started as a rescue mission for two exhausted, slightly hangry travelers had quietly turned into one of the most memorable meals of our entire trip.

And the funny thing is...

If we’d found food ten minutes earlier...

If we’d decided to go back to the hotel...

If we’d skipped “just one more block”...

We never would have found it.

The Best Travel Memories Rarely Begin With Perfect Planning

As a luxury travel advisor, people sometimes assume every remarkable moment on my own trips has been carefully planned months in advance.

Many of them are.

I spend hours researching neighborhoods, hotels, restaurants, and experiences before I ever board a plane. I know where I want to stay. I know which cafés I’d like to visit. I usually have a running list of places I’m hoping to discover. Multiple dining reservations booked every day.

But some of my favorite memories have absolutely nothing to do with the itinerary.

They happen in the space between the plans.

They’re the unexpected conversation with a concierge.

The tiny wine bar you duck into because it starts raining.

The hidden courtyard you weren’t looking for.

Or the historic restaurant you only found because hunger convinced you to keep walking instead of giving up.

Those are the moments that stay with you.

Not because they’re famous.

Because they couldn’t have been manufactured.

My Favorite Souvenir Wasn’t Something I Bought

We think about Casa Botín often.

Not because it’s the oldest restaurant in the world.

Not because Hemingway once sat there.

Not even because the meal itself was wonderful.

I think about it because it reminded me that some of the greatest moments in travel begin when things aren’t going according to plan.

When you’re tired.

When you’re hungry.

When you’re wondering if it’s time to head back to the hotel.

Travel has a funny way of rewarding curiosity.

Sometimes all it asks is that you walk one more block.

And every now and then...

One more block changes the entire story.

One Final Thought

Looking back, I don’t remember exactly what time we arrived.

I don’t remember what shoes I was wearing.

I couldn’t even tell you the route we walked through Madrid that afternoon.

But I remember the feeling.

The relief of finally sitting down.

The excitement of realizing we had accidentally discovered something extraordinary.

The reminder that travel isn’t always about finding the places you’ve spent months researching.

Sometimes it’s about remaining curious enough to discover the places you never knew you were looking for.

So the next time you’re tired...

The next time you’re tempted to call it a day...

The next time you’re standing on a European street wondering whether it’s worth walking one more block...

Take the walk.

You never know what might be waiting around the corner.

Before We Begin

The first morning tells me more about a luxury hotel than the first evening ever could.

By breakfast, the excitement of arrival has settled.

The welcome drink has been served.

The room has been admired.

The luggage has been unpacked.

Now comes something far more revealing.

The hotel simply has to care for people.

No grand gestures.

No dramatic first impression.

Just quiet hospitality repeated table after table, guest after guest.

Breakfast has become my favorite room in every hotel.

Not because I love beautiful buffets.

Although I certainly appreciate a perfectly flaky croissant, fresh fruit picked that morning, and an exceptional cappuccino.

I love breakfast because it’s where luxury stops performing.

It’s where a hotel quietly reveals who it really is.

For years I assumed I simply enjoyed slow mornings.

Then I realized I was doing something else entirely.

I was observing.

Watching the rhythm of the room.

Listening.

Noticing.

Without meaning to, breakfast had become my unofficial hotel inspection.

It tells me almost everything I need to know.

When I begin planning a European itinerary, clients often ask me the same question.

“What should we do on our free day?”

I usually smile.

Because my answer surprises them.

Nothing.

At least...nothing that’s scheduled.

No museum reservations.

No guided tours.

No train to catch.

No alarm clock.

No carefully timed itinerary.

Just an entire day with nowhere you absolutely have to be.

I’ve come to believe it’s one of the greatest luxuries you can give yourself.

One of the biggest differences between traveling and vacationing is permission.

Permission to wake up naturally.

Permission to order another cappuccino.

Permission to wander without checking your phone every twenty minutes.

Permission to miss something.

Americans aren’t particularly good at this.

We’re taught that every hour should be productive.

Every day should have a purpose.

Every vacation should maximize the experience.

Every famous landmark.

Every viewpoint.

Then I noticed something interesting.

The memories I returned home talking about were almost never the things I’d scheduled months earlier.

They were the moments that happened because I had nowhere else to be.

A conversation with a hotel owner over breakfast.

An afternoon spent reading beside a mountain pool.

A tiny bakery we discovered because we took the wrong street.

A church bell echoing through an empty piazza while we sat with another espresso.

None of those moments appeared on my itinerary.

Yet they’re the ones I remember most vividly.

What a “Nothing Day” Actually Looks Like

Contrary to its name...

A Nothing Day isn’t really about doing nothing.

It’s about removing expectations.

Maybe you wake up slowly.

Breakfast stretches into late morning because the pastries are too good and the conversation is even better.

Instead of rushing toward your next reservation, you decide to walk.

Not somewhere.

Just...walk.

You wander through neighborhoods tourists rarely visit.

You stop when something catches your eye.

A bookstore.

A flower market.

A tiny café with only six tables.

Perhaps lunch turns into two hours because no one is watching the clock.

Maybe you head back to the hotel for an afternoon swim.

Or an hour on the balcony with your book.

Perhaps you discover the perfect wine bar completely by accident.

Nothing extraordinary happens.

And somehow...

Everything feels extraordinary.

Luxury Is Having Nowhere Else to Be

After sixteen years designing bespoke European journeys, I’ve realized something.

Luxury isn’t always about where you stay.

Sometimes it’s about how your day feels.

Can you linger over breakfast without looking at your watch?

Can you say yes to one more glass of wine?

Can you stop because a violinist is playing in the square?

Can you walk down the smaller street simply because it looks beautiful?

Those tiny decisions become impossible when every hour has already been planned.

Freedom is one of the most overlooked luxuries in travel.

Some of My Favorite Days Were Completely Unplanned

When I think back on Italy, I don’t immediately remember museum tickets.

I remember sitting in a quiet piazza long after lunch had ended because neither of us wanted to leave.

When I think about the Dolomites, I remember lingering on a hotel terrace watching clouds roll over the mountains.

In Venice, I remember wandering until we forgot what time it was.

Those days weren’t empty.

They were simply allowed to unfold on their own.

Looking back, they became the soul of the trip.

Why I Build “Nothing Days” Into Client Itineraries

Sometimes clients ask if they should fill that open day with another excursion.

Almost every time, I encourage them not to.

Because I know something they haven’t experienced yet.

Europe has a way of giving you unexpected invitations.

A local recommends a hidden restaurant.

You stumble across a weekly market.

The weather suddenly becomes perfect for sitting outside all afternoon.

If every minute is booked, you have to say no.

A Nothing Day leaves room to say yes.

One Final Thought

If you only remember one thing from this article, let it be this.

You don’t have to earn rest.

You don’t have to justify a quiet afternoon.

You don’t have to fill every blank space on your itinerary.

Some of the richest travel memories aren’t created because you planned perfectly.

They’re created because you left enough room for life to surprise you.

These days, every Europe itinerary I design includes at least one day that belongs to no one.

Not to me.

Not to a guide.

Not to a reservation.

Not even to a checklist.

It belongs entirely to the traveler.

And I have a feeling it often becomes their favorite day.

There was a time when I thought the first night in Europe had to be spectacular.

After all, we’d spent months planning the trip.

There were restaurants to experience.

Wine bars I’d saved.

Hidden trattorias I couldn’t wait to try.

That first dinner somehow felt like the official beginning of the vacation.

Then reality usually arrived before the appetizers.

An overnight flight across the Atlantic.

Immigration.

Luggage.

Transfers.

Hotel check in.

A long walk through a new city because I simply couldn’t wait to start exploring.

By evening, I found myself sitting at beautiful restaurant tables feeling something I hadn’t expected.

Exhaustion.

The excitement was still there.

My body simply hadn’t caught up.

Jet lag has a funny way of reminding us that we’re human.

No matter how beautiful the destination.

Over the years, something unexpected happened.

Without ever talking about it...

The longer I work in this industry, the more convinced I become that the world’s best hotels aren’t necessarily the most expensive.

They’re the ones where hundreds of thoughtful details quietly disappear into the background.

You don’t consciously notice them.

You simply feel better because they’re there.

I thought it was found in five-star hotels, Michelin-starred restaurants, marble bathrooms, private transfers, and suites with breathtaking views. I believed luxury was something you could point to. Something that could be photographed, rated, and compared.

And to be fair, those things are wonderful. I still appreciate exceptional design, beautiful accommodations, impeccable service, and a perfectly made cappuccino served on a terrace overlooking the sea.

But somewhere over the last sixteen years, something quietly shifted.

Not overnight.

Not after one extraordinary hotel.

Not because of one unforgettable destination.

It happened slowly, almost without me noticing.

One conversation at a time.

One family-owned hotel at a time.

One long lunch that somehow stretched into the afternoon.

One village where nothing remarkable happened except that I suddenly realized I wasn’t thinking about the time.

When I first began traveling through Europe professionally, I was captivated by what many people associate with luxury. The grand entrances. The polished marble. The chandeliers suspended above elegant lobbies. The suites seemed larger than my first apartment. Every new hotel felt like another benchmark, another experience that redefined what high-end travel could be.

I was fascinated by the spectacle of it all.

Today, I rarely remember those details.

What I remember instead are the moments that could never be listed in a hotel’s amenities.

I remember the owner of a small family-run property who insisted on walking us to our car when we checked out, simply to thank us for visiting.

I remember sitting at breakfast long after my coffee cup was empty because no one rushed me to leave.

I remember a concierge quietly changing a dinner reservation because he knew the light would be more beautiful thirty minutes later.

I remember opening the windows of my room in the Dolomites and hearing...nothing.

No traffic.

No notifications.

No urgency.

Just silence.

It struck me that silence had become one of the rarest luxuries I owned.

Somewhere along the way, my definition of luxury stopped expanding.

It started simplifying.

Luxury became having nowhere else I needed to be.

It became arriving at a hotel where the staff greeted returning guests by name, not because it was written in their reservation, but because they genuinely remembered them.

It became lingering over breakfast without checking my phone.

It became returning to the same café three mornings in a row because the owner smiled before I even reached the door.

It became slowing down enough to notice the scent of fresh bread drifting through a quiet village before anyone else had stepped outside.

Those moments rarely appear in glossy brochures.

They don’t fit neatly inside social media captions.

They certainly don’t show up in hotel star ratings.

Yet they’re the very moments I carry home with me.

Working in luxury travel has given me access to some of the most remarkable hotels in the world, but perhaps the greatest gift this profession has given me is perspective.

I’ve learned that the most expensive hotel isn’t always the most memorable.

The largest suite isn’t always the most comfortable.

The property with the longest list of amenities isn’t always the one that leaves the deepest impression.

Some of the most extraordinary hospitality I’ve ever experienced came from people who simply cared.

Owners who greeted guests at breakfast.

Chefs who proudly explained the ingredients they had gathered that morning.

Housekeepers who noticed I preferred extra pillows before I ever had to ask.

None of those things appeared on a booking confirmation.

And yet they became the reason I couldn’t wait to return.

This realization has quietly changed the way I recommend hotels to my clients.

Years ago, I might have begun with room categories, star ratings, and amenities.

Today, I begin somewhere entirely different.

I ask myself a much simpler question.

How will this place make them feel?

Will they leave feeling rested?

Inspired?

Connected?

Will they remember the architecture?

Or will they remember the conversation they had over breakfast with the owner who welcomed them as though they were old friends?

Those answers matter infinitely more than whether a suite has one hundred additional square feet.

The longer I work in this industry, the less interested I become in defining luxury by what it costs.

Instead, I find myself measuring it by what it gives back.

Time.

Presence.

Connection.

A sense of belonging in places that, only days before, were completely unfamiliar.

Perhaps that’s why Europe continues to pull me back year after year.

Not because it’s filled with beautiful hotels.

Although it certainly is.

It continues to remind me that the richest experiences are often the quietest ones.

That luxury isn’t something we collect.

It’s something we feel.

And more often than not, we only recognize it after we’ve returned home.

Looking back, I’m grateful my understanding of luxury evolved.

If it hadn’t, I might still be chasing impressive hotels instead of meaningful experiences.

I’d still be counting stars instead of conversations.

I’d still be measuring square footage instead of memories.

These days, I no longer ask whether a hotel is luxurious.

I ask whether it’s unforgettable.

I’ve discovered those are rarely the same thing.

Perhaps that’s the greatest lesson sixteen years in luxury travel has taught me.

Luxury was never hidden inside five stars.

It was quietly waiting in the moments between them.

There are few destinations that capture our imagination quite like the Greek Islands.

Long before most travelers ever arrive, they’ve already begun picturing the trip in their minds.

Whitewashed villages cascading toward impossibly blue water.

Morning cappuccinos overlooking the sea.

Fresh seafood enjoyed slowly beneath strings of lights.

Afternoons spent wandering narrow streets before returning to a beautiful hotel just in time for sunset.

It’s one of the most photographed destinations in the world, and understandably so.

The Greek Islands are every bit as beautiful as you’ve imagined.

What often surprises travelers isn’t the scenery.

It’s the logistics.

After designing luxury itineraries throughout Greece for many years, I’ve learned that the greatest challenge isn’t choosing which islands to visit.

It’s understanding how differently they work from the version most people have created in their minds.

Instagram has done an incredible job of inspiring people to visit Greece.

Unfortunately, it has also made island hopping look far simpler than it actually is.

That’s not a criticism.

It’s simply the reality of trying to capture an entire vacation in a thirty second reel.

The truth is, Greece rewards travelers who slow down long before they ever arrive.

The Greek Islands Aren’t as Close Together as They Look

One of the most common assumptions I hear is surprisingly simple.

“We’ll just hop over to another island.”

When you’re looking at a map, the islands appear wonderfully close together.

In reality, every move requires planning.

Ferry schedules change throughout the season.

Some islands connect directly while others require longer routes or transfers.

Sea conditions can affect schedules, particularly during periods of stronger winds.

Hotels often aren’t located near the port.

Transfers need to be coordinated.

Luggage has to be managed.

Before you’ve even unpacked, an entire travel day can quietly disappear.

None of this means island hopping is a bad idea.

Quite the opposite.

Some of my favorite European itineraries include multiple Greek islands.

The difference is that they’re planned around the realities of travel rather than the fantasy of constant movement.

Luxury isn’t measured by how many islands you visit.

It’s measured by how much you actually experience once you arrive.

Your Hotel Isn’t Just Where You Sleep

One of the biggest differences between planning Greece and planning much of mainland Europe is the role your hotel plays.

In cities like Rome, Paris, or Florence, many travelers spend most of the day exploring museums, neighborhoods, restaurants, and historic sites before returning to the hotel in the evening.

The hotel supports the destination.

In Greece, the relationship is often reversed.

Your hotel becomes part of the destination itself.

You linger over breakfast.

You spend the afternoon by the pool.

You return before sunset for a glass of wine overlooking the sea.

You may book a spa treatment, enjoy dinner on property, or simply spend hours reading on your terrace.

Suddenly, choosing a hotel becomes far more important than simply selecting the nicest room.

You’re choosing how you’ll spend your days.

That distinction changes everything.

Luxury in Greece Often Looks Different Than People Expect

When many travelers tell me they want a luxury hotel, they’re imagining exceptional service, beautiful accommodations, outstanding food, and unforgettable views.

They’re absolutely right.

But what surprises many first-time visitors is what luxury often requires in exchange.

Privacy.

Space.

Silence.

The very things that make a luxury resort feel extraordinary frequently place it outside the heart of a bustling village.

Many of Greece’s most remarkable hotels aren’t located directly beside the cafés, boutiques, and waterfront promenades people picture when they imagine island life.

Instead, they’re tucked into hillsides overlooking the sea, hidden along quiet stretches of coastline, or perched above dramatic cliffs where the only sounds are waves and the wind.

Neither approach is better.

They’re simply different experiences.

Some travelers dream of walking everywhere.

Others dream of never leaving the hotel.

The magic happens when those expectations match the property you’ve chosen.

Every Island Has Its Own Rhythm

One of the greatest misconceptions about Greece is that the islands all offer the same experience.

They don’t.

Some feel lively long after sunset.

Others seem to encourage afternoon naps and unhurried dinners.

Some invite long days on the beach.

Others reward travelers who enjoy wandering quiet villages, discovering local tavernas, or driving into the countryside.

Choosing the right island has far less to do with finding “the best” one.

It has everything to do with choosing the pace that feels right for you.

Whenever I begin planning a Greek itinerary, I find myself asking questions that have very little to do with hotels.

How do you imagine spending your mornings?

What do you picture yourselves doing after dinner?

Would you rather hear waves from your terrace or music drifting from a nearby square?

Those answers tell me far more than any hotel wishlist ever could.

The Ferry Is Part of the Journey

There is something undeniably romantic about arriving by sea.

Watching an island slowly appear on the horizon never loses its magic.

But ferries are also real transportation.

They run on schedules.

They fill with travelers.

They require luggage.

Sometimes they’re wonderfully smooth.

Sometimes the sea reminds you who’s in charge.

The more flexible your mindset, the more enjoyable the experience becomes.

I often encourage clients to think of ferry days the same way they would a scenic train journey through Italy.

It’s not wasted time.

It’s simply another chapter of the trip.

Fewer Islands. Better Memories.

Perhaps the biggest lesson Greece has taught me isn’t about ferries or hotels at all.

It’s about time.

Every additional island means another packing day.

Another checkout.

Another transfer.

Another arrival.

Those moments add up more quickly than most travelers realize.

The vacations I remember most aren’t the ones where I managed to squeeze five islands into ten days.

They’re the ones where I stayed long enough to become familiar with the rhythm of a place.

The café owner who recognized me on the third morning.

The beach I returned to simply because I knew exactly where the afternoon light would be.

The waiter who remembered how I took my coffee.

Those are the memories that remain long after the ferry tickets have been tucked away.

One Final Thought

People often ask me which Greek island is my favorite.

I’ve never been able to answer that question.

Not because I don’t have favorites.

Because every island tells a different story.

The better question has always been this:

Who are you hoping to be while you’re there?

Do you picture yourselves slowing down?

Exploring?

Celebrating?

Reading by the sea?

Walking until sunset without a plan?

The right island isn’t determined by what’s trending this summer.

It’s determined by the life you hope to live for the few precious days you’re there.

Once you begin planning that way, Greece becomes something far richer than a collection of beautiful islands.

It becomes an experience you’ll quietly carry home with you.

An Editor’s Letter

There are moments in travel that stay with us forever.

Most people assume those moments happen at the top of the Eiffel Tower, aboard a gondola in Venice, or while watching the sun disappear behind the hills of Tuscany.

Sometimes they do.

But more often than not, they happen somewhere much quieter.

They happen while someone silently notices you’ve had a long flight.

They happen when a concierge remembers your name after meeting you only once.

They happen over an unhurried breakfast that somehow makes you forget what day it is.

I’ve spent the better part of my career helping travelers find those moments.

From the outside, that work looks like hotel recommendations, restaurant reservations, and beautifully organized itineraries.

From the inside, it feels very different.

It feels like studying human nature.

Because luxury, at its heart, has never really been about hotels.

It’s about how a place makes us feel.

That feeling is remarkably difficult to measure.

And yet, over the years, I’ve quietly built my own way of measuring it.

Not with spreadsheets.

Not with star ratings.

Not with online reviews.

But with observations.

Thousands of them.

This notebook has traveled with me through palaces in Venice, family-owned mountain retreats in the Dolomites, grand hotels in Rome, contemporary sanctuaries in Milan, historic buildings in Madrid, and countless properties in between.

Some pages are filled with glowing praise.

Before I Notice the Marble, I Notice the Silence

People often ask me what I look for when I walk into a luxury hotel.

It’s usually asked with genuine curiosity.

Sometimes they’ve watched me slowly wander through a lobby while everyone else heads directly toward reception.

Sometimes they’ve noticed me pausing near a breakfast room, quietly observing the rhythm of service instead of rushing toward the buffet.

Occasionally they’ve caught me standing perfectly still for a few seconds immediately after walking through the front door.

“What are you looking at?”

The truth is...

I’m rarely looking at anything.

I’m paying attention to everything.

Luxury has a rhythm.

After sixteen years designing bespoke journeys and spending countless nights inside some of Europe’s most celebrated hotels, I’ve discovered that every truly memorable property possesses one.

It’s almost impossible to describe until you’ve experienced it.

The best hotels seem to breathe.

Nothing feels hurried.

Nothing feels performative.

Nothing asks for your attention.

Everything simply exists with quiet confidence.

Ironically, those are often the hotels people remember most.

Not because they’re louder.

Because they’re calmer.

I’ve learned that exceptional hospitality doesn’t compete for your attention.

It gently lowers your heart rate.

The irony is that most travelers begin evaluating a luxury hotel from exactly the opposite direction.

We notice the chandelier.

The marble.

The fresh flowers.

The artwork.

The designer furniture.

The spectacular suite shared all over Instagram.

Hotels know this.

Those visual moments are important.

They’re beautiful.

They’re aspirational.

They’re also surprisingly easy to create.

What isn’t easy to create...

...is atmosphere.

Atmosphere cannot be purchased.

It cannot be installed during a renovation.

It cannot be designed by an architect.

Atmosphere is accumulated.

It’s built through hundreds of small decisions made every single day.

How quickly someone looks up when you arrive.

Whether conversations at reception feel rushed or relaxed.

How naturally staff move through public spaces.

Whether music complements a room or competes with it.

Whether guests instinctively lower their voices.

Whether time itself seems to slow down.

These are the things I notice long before I notice the stone floors.

And strangely enough...

They’re usually the most accurate predictors of everything else.

Years ago, I thought I was simply becoming more experienced.

Now I realize I was becoming more observant.

There’s a difference.

Experience teaches you where to look.

Observation teaches you what matters.

That’s why I almost never answer the question,

“What’s your favorite luxury hotel?”

It’s an impossible question.

My favorite hotel for a honeymoon in Venice may be completely wrong for a family celebrating three generations together.

The perfect Dolomites retreat for someone seeking silence could leave another traveler feeling isolated.

A grand palace in Rome might be unforgettable for one client and overwhelming for another.

Luxury isn’t universal.

Context changes everything.

The better question is this:

“Who is this hotel perfect for?”

That single question has shaped nearly every recommendation I’ve made throughout my career.

Because my responsibility has never been finding beautiful hotels.

There are thousands of beautiful hotels.

My responsibility is finding the place where a traveler feels understood.

That is a much more difficult thing to accomplish.

Over time, I stopped reading hotel reviews the way most people do.

I still appreciate thoughtful reviews.

They can reveal useful details.

But I no longer rely on them to tell me whether a property is exceptional.

Instead, I’ve developed something much more personal.

A quiet framework.

Not a checklist.

Not a rating system.

More like an ongoing conversation I have with every hotel I visit.

Some questions are practical.

Others are deeply emotional.

Some can be answered within thirty seconds.

Others require an entire stay.

Collectively, they answer one simple question.

Would I confidently place one of my clients here?

If the answer isn’t an immediate and enthusiastic yes...

The hotel doesn’t make my Black Book.

Not because it failed.

Because excellence isn’t enough.

The fit has to be extraordinary.

And perhaps that’s the biggest misconception about luxury travel.

People assume my job is helping clients find the most expensive hotels.

It isn’t.

My job is helping them avoid expensive disappointments.

Sometimes that means recommending a celebrated palace.

Sometimes it means quietly steering them toward a thirty-room family-owned property that most travelers have never heard of.

The latter happens far more often than people expect.

Because remarkable hospitality is rarely the loudest voice in the room.

It’s usually the quietest.

They’re much harder to remember.

After sixteen years as a luxury travel advisor, hundreds of hotel site inspections, countless hosted stays, and more room tours than I can count, I’ve realized something.

The hotels I recommend most aren’t always the most expensive.

Lesson One

Italy Isn’t a Country You Conquer

It’s a country you return to.

One of the biggest mistakes I see is trying to fit too much into one vacation.

Rome.

Florence.

Venice.

Cinque Terre.

Lake Como.

The Dolomites.

Amalfi Coast.

Tuscany.

On paper, it looks exciting.

In reality, it often becomes trains, transfers, hotel check ins, packing, unpacking, and constantly watching the clock.

Luxury travel isn’t about seeing everything.

It’s about giving yourself enough time to experience something deeply.

If this is your first visit, choose fewer places.

Stay longer.

You’ll leave wanting more.

That’s exactly how Italy should feel.

Lesson Two

Choose Hotels That Match Your Travel Style

Not every luxury hotel is designed for the same traveler.

Some are destinations in themselves.

Others are perfect because they place you steps from a lively piazza.

Ask yourself:

Do I want peaceful mornings?

Walkability?

A spa?

A historic palace?

Mountain views?

Lake views?

A rooftop overlooking the city?

The “best” hotel on paper isn’t always the best hotel for you.

That’s one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned as an advisor.

Lesson Three

Build Your Days Around Meals

In Italy, meals aren’t interruptions.

They’re experiences.

Leave room for long lunches.

Choose fewer dinner reservations.

Say yes to another glass of wine.

If lunch unexpectedly lasts three hours, congratulations.

You’re doing Italy correctly.

Lesson Four

Slow Mornings Are Part of the Luxury

One of my favorite rituals is hotel breakfast.

Not because of the buffet.

Because it’s where the destination begins waking up.

Order another cappuccino.

Sit by the window.

Watch the city come alive.

The museums will still be there an hour later.

Those quiet mornings often become my favorite memories.

Lesson Five

Walk More Than You Planned

Italy rewards curiosity.

Some of my favorite discoveries have happened while walking between two places I already intended to visit.

A hidden courtyard.

A tiny wine bar.

An artisan workshop.

A neighborhood bakery.

Leave room to wander.

Lesson Six

Don’t Chase Famous Restaurants Every Night

Some of my most memorable meals have happened because we stumbled upon a family run restaurant with no expectations.

Michelin stars are wonderful.

So is homemade pasta served by someone whose grandparents opened the restaurant decades ago.

Leave room for both.

Lesson Seven

Luxury Looks Different in Italy

Luxury isn’t always marble bathrooms and designer boutiques.

Sometimes it’s a family owned hotel where the owner greets you each morning by name.

A terrace overlooking vineyards.

Fresh pastries delivered warm to your table.

A concierge who remembers your favorite wine after one conversation.

Those are the moments that stay with you.

Lesson Eight

Leave Space for Nothing

This may be my most important piece of advice.

Don’t schedule every hour.

Leave one afternoon with absolutely no plans.

Sit in a piazza.

Read your book.

Order gelato.

Watch life happen around you.

Italy has a remarkable way of rewarding travelers who leave room for spontaneity.

Lesson Nine

Don’t Judge a Trip by How Much You Saw

Years from now, you probably won’t remember exactly how many churches you visited.

You’ll remember breakfast overlooking the mountains.

A conversation with a hotel owner.

The smell of fresh bread drifting through a quiet street.

The view from your hotel balcony.

Luxury travel isn’t measured in landmarks.

It’s measured in moments.

One Final Thought

People often ask me how to “do Italy right.”

I don’t think there is one answer.

But if sixteen years of planning luxury journeys has taught me anything, it’s this.

Italy isn’t asking you to move faster.

It’s inviting you to slow down.

Stay for another espresso.

Take the longer route home.

Order dessert.

Return to the same café tomorrow.

The country has existed for thousands of years.

It doesn’t need to be conquered in one vacation.

It simply asks that you notice it.

And if you do...

You’ll almost certainly find yourself planning your return before you’ve even boarded the flight home.
